Bathing the

Buddha Celebration

Origins of Bathing the Buddha

Each year, the eighth day of the fourth lunar month is a joyful occasion for Buddhists, as it marks the day Buddhism’s founder, Sakyamuni Buddha was born in Lumbini Garden, Kapilavatsu in Northern India as Prince Siddhartha Gautama, 2600 years ago. According to the Sutras, flowers bloomed and nine heavenly dragons appeared streaming out the purest fragrant rain to cleanse the newly born Prince. Hence, the Buddha’s Birthday Celebration is also known as the "Bathing the Buddha Celebration”.

Do we really give the Buddha a bath? Nay, it is rather to cleanse the Buddha within by way of a ceremony involving the image of the Buddha. The emphasis is on purifying one’s mind. Therefore, the celebration of the birth of the Buddha should be conducted with solemn attitudes encompassing moral development, compassion and respect.

The Fourfold Significance of Bathing the Buddha:

  1. While Bathing the Buddha, we contemplate the cleansing of our defilements. One should vow to let go of greed, hatred and ignorance, and purify one’s body, speech and mind. One should resolve to do good deeds, speak good words, and think good thoughts to reveal one’s inherent nature and realize the pure Dharma body of the Buddha.

  2. In our daily lives, we use water to clean ourselves and do the laundry. To purify one’s defilements, one needs to use Dharma water. Bathing the Buddha helps one to contemplate the purification of one’s minds by the washing away of defilements with Dharma Water.

  3. Bathing the Buddha reminds us to maintain a pure mind. When Bathing the Buddha, one should contemplate whether one’s mind is pure or not. By seeking to transform a defiled mind into the Bodhi mind, one wishes that society be peaceful and unperturbed by violence, deception and myriad evils, and that the Pure Land of truth, kindness, and beauty may be established on Earth.

  4. Besides the commemoration of the Buddha, the focus is on purifying one’s mind. One should dedicate the merits of Bathing the Buddha to the emancipation of one’s parents, relatives and ancestors from tribulations, and to the liberation of all sentient beings in the six realms from suffering.

Benefits of Bathing the Buddha

According to the Sutra of the Merits of Bathing the Buddha, the benefits of Bathing the Buddha are as follows:

  1. One will enjoy wealth, happiness, good health, and longevity.

  2. One will have all their wishes fulfilled.

  3. One’s relatives, friends, and family will be in harmony.

  4. One will be distant from the Eight Sufferings, and severe the source of suffering permanently.

  5. One will realize enlightenment quickly.

Decorum while Bathing the Buddha

  1. Maintain a joyous state of mind and have faith in the merit of Bathing the Buddha while joining palms and bowing to the Buddha.

  2. Fill the ladle with fragrant water mindfully.

  3. While Bathing the Buddha, take your time and contemplate the Dharma.

  4. Sprinkle water from the left shoulder of the Buddha and vow silently: I vow to stop doing evil deeds (i.e. do good deeds).

  5. Sprinkle water from the right shoulder of the Buddha and vow silently: I vow to cultivate good deeds (i.e. speak good words).

  6. Sprinkle water from the left shoulder of the Buddha again and vow silently: I vow to liberate all sentient beings (i.e. think good thoughts).

  7. After Bathing the Buddha, it is said that one is complete in faith and vow while blessed with virtue and merit. Make another bow to the Buddha to conclude the ceremony.

Eight Stages of the

Buddha's Progress

Descent from Tusita Heaven

In a former life, Sakyamuni Buddha’s eventual awakening was predicted by Dipankara Buddha, who said that he would become a bodhisattva and then later become the next Buddha of the Saha world. Before his final rebirth in which he would attain awakening, he dwelt in the inner court of Tusita Heaven for four thousand years as he observed the conditions needed for bringing liberation to the Saha world.

Entry into the Womb

After he had dwelt in Tusita Heaven for four thousand years, the Buddha descended to the Saha world riding a white elephant and entered the womb of his noble mother, Queen Maya, from the right side of her body.

Birth

On the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, as flowers bloomed in the warmth of spring while a brilliant sun shined in the sky, the Buddha was born in the Lumbini Garden. After his birth, the Buddha took seven steps, pointed one hand towards the sky and his other hand towards the ground, and said, “In the heavens above and the earth below, I alone am the honored one.”

Leaving Home

At the age of twenty-nine, the Buddha was moved by the impermanence of the world, observing its inequalities and injustice. There upon, courageously and with determination, the Buddha rode his horse out of the city gate, leaving his home and renouncing his former life.

Subduing Mara

As he meditated beneath the bodhi tree, the Buddha was plagued by the demon Mara. Mara came internally as the afflictions of greed and anger, and came externally as opportunities for carnal pleasure and wealth. Subduing Mara and remaining untouched by the seductions placed before him required great determination, heroism, wisdom, and fearlessness.

Awakening

After Mara was subdued, the Buddha attained awakening on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, as he sat beneath the bodhi tree gazing into the starry night.

Turning the Dharma Wheel

After he attained awakening, the Buddha taught the Dharma for forty-nine years and gave teachings at more than three hundred Dharma assemblies. He spread the truth to all of humankind and ensured that the Dharma Wheel would always be turning in this world.

Final Nirvana

On the fifteenth day of the second lunar month in the Buddha’s eightieth year, his teaching career was complete. In the city of Kusinagara, along the banks of the Ajitavati River, between two sala trees, the Buddha entered final nirvana.
